Where We Share is a local classifieds platform based in Canada. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and what choices you have. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
1. What we collect and how we use it
We collect personal information only to operate the service. We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with third parties beyond what is necessary to deliver the features described below.
Account information
When you sign up we collect your name, email address, and password. Your password is stored as a one-way cryptographic hash — it is never stored in readable form and we cannot retrieve it. We use your name and email to identify your account, display your name to connections you have accepted, and send you transactional notifications about activity on your account (borrow requests, connection invitations, and similar).
Phone number (optional)
If you provide a phone number we use it to send SMS notifications. You can use Where We Share without providing a phone number.
Location
We ask for your general location so we can show you listings near you in search results. Your location is coarsened to approximately neighbourhood level before it is stored — your precise address or GPS coordinates are never saved. We do not track your location over time or share it with other users.
Listing content
When you create a listing we store the title, description, condition, and any other details you provide. This information is shown to users you are connected with, within the visibility rules you set. We do not index listings publicly or share them outside your connection network.
Connections and invitations
We store records of your connections and any invitations you have sent or received, including the email addresses of people you invite. This is used to build your network and determine which listings you can see and which users can see yours.
Borrow and lending history
Records of completed borrows are retained so that both parties have an accurate history of what was lent and borrowed. This history remains even if a user deletes their account, but their name will appear as "Deleted User."
Session data
We use a secure cookie to keep you logged in between visits. This cookie does not track you across other websites.
2. Third-party services
To operate the platform we use third-party services for email delivery, SMS delivery, and file storage. These services receive only the data necessary to perform their function. All providers are contractually bound to handle your data securely and not use it for their own purposes.

3. Data retention and deletion
You can delete your account at any time from your account settings. Deletion removes your profile, contact details, location, and listing content immediately from our live systems. Your borrow and lending history is preserved so that other users' records remain intact, but your name will appear as "Deleted User."
Residual copies of your data may exist in encrypted database backups and will be purged within 7 days as those backups expire.
4. Your rights under PIPEDA
You have the right to:
- Know what personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate information
- Withdraw consent and request deletion
- Ask how your data is being used

5. Security
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed and never stored in readable form. Access to production data is restricted to authorised personnel.
No system connected to the internet can be guaranteed to be fully secure. Please keep your password safe and do not share it with anyone. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at [email protected].
6. Children
Where We Share is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete the account promptly.
7. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes we will notify you by email or by posting a notice on the site. The date at the top of this page always reflects the current version. Continued use of Where We Share after a change is posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
